Is Liquid De-icing Only For Pre-treating or Anti-icing?

While liquid de-icing is an excellent choice for pre-treating (anti-icing) prior to a winter storm or an ice event, it is not limited only to pre-treating.

The primary purpose of our liquid salt brince is post treating after a winter storm or ice event or “de-icing”.

Will Liquid De-icing Work on Thick Ice or Compact Snow?

Our liquid de-icing works great on hard packed snow and thicker ice. Our application does very well on ice and snow up to 1”

Will Liquid Damage Our Concrete?

It is actually water that is hard on concrete and other surface. As snow and ice melts, the water may seep into porous or poorly laid concrete. Once the water goes through a freeze-thaw cycle, it can cause the concrete to flake, chip or even crack.

Since our liquid de-icing is a hydroscopic compound we absorb more moisture and create more heat thus evaporating the water faster. Our liquid de-icing also works at night or in shaded areas without sun. Salt alone does not.

Traditional rock salt (Sodium Chloride) may leave water standing as it stops working at night our under cloud cover. This standing water may refreeze causing the most damage to the surface lot or sidewalk.

Will Magnesium and Calcium Chloride Cause Concrete Failures Such As Surface Spalling and Scaling?

If concrete is made, handled, and finished properly, liquid de-icing does not have any detrimental effects on concrete, regardless of age. Concrete should be made with its end purpose in mind and the most crucial roles occur during its design, placing and finishing. In general, concrete that will be exposed to deicing should be made with a water to cement (w/c) ratio of .45 or less and have an air content of between 5% and 8%. These quotients are critical to the longevity of the concrete, but even if both specifications are met, the concrete can still be ruined by improper finishing practices.

Water is required to hydrate the cement, but it can be both friend and foe. 9 times out of 10 the spalling or scaling of concrete is because the finisher has ruined the w/c ratio by adding water to the surface during finishing operations. The addition of water is done to make finish work easier, but there are other methods available that won’t destroy the w/c ratio.

How Is This Solution Better Than Liquid De-Icing I have Tried in the Past?

We put down the proper amount of de-icer through a calibrated GPS/pressure controlled system. This ensures the proper amount is applied, juggling the variable of speed, distance to ground, pressure, and current/forecasted temperature to achieve a perfect result. The pre-mixing of the brine is crucial to the success of the application. Blending in the proper amount of Calcium Chloride, Salt, Magnesium rust inhibitors, and water with powerful agitation is a must. The custom recipe must be precisely adjusted for temperature. The brine mix must be blended with the proper agitation, applied with the proper pressure, and uniformity of coating.

At what temperature is salt still effective?

As the temperature drops below 25 degrees fahrenheit, the effectiveness of salt (Sodium Chloride) degrades dramatically and three to ten times the amount of salt is needed to produce ice melt. At temps below 10 degrees fahrenheit, salting typically fails to produce any results.

Our Iceworks liquid applications are effective down to -30 degrees fahrenheit.

Why is Iceworks liquid application so effective?

Liquid de-icing generates heat as it dissolves. While most other deicers depend on their surroundings for heat, our liquid de-icing slurry mix generates heat as it melts. A pound of calcium chloride can raise the temperature of a gallon of water by over 30°F (17°C). This heat release is especially important during cold weather when other deicers lose effectiveness.
